Uncovering Southeast Asia’s Seas: Nurturing Marine Ecosystems for Livelihoods and Resilience
- 09 Dec 2023
Southeast Asia is one of the world’s largest marine biodiversity hotspots, where millions in the region rely on the ocean for food, livelihoods and protection from natural disasters. Yet, interest in the region’s marine environment – and its contribution to the well-being of its inhabitants – is only just starting to develop. This panel will explore why governments, companies, research institutions and philanthropies in the region need to take a bigger interest in Southeast Asia’s marine environment, in terms of (a) promoting scientific research in marine biology and oceanography (b) developing a holistic ocean governance approach, and (c) providing funding to derisk ocean-based enterprises that could benefit rural livelihoods.
